When Professor Ismael Montana, the WARA President, visited the West African Research Center (WARC) a few months ago, a courtesy visit was arranged for Montana to meet the Rector of University Cheikh Anta Diop, Professor Aly Mbaye. During the hour that the visit lasted, Professor Mbaye reminded Ismael and the Director of WARC that his professional career took a turn, and a positive one, with one of the fellowships offered by WARA/WARC since this engaged him in a collaborative research work which definitely changed his perspectives and his research partnerships and priorities.
He also asked if WARA/WARC could help develop initiatives between US campuses and University Cheikh Anta Diop in areas such as:
Grant writing and collaborative research
Graduate student coaching
Faculty and graduate student exchange and mobility
Collaboration with funding sources.
On the Diaspora side, the workshop was attended by Professors Ismael Montana, Ibra Sene, Hilary Jones, Sylvia Macauley and Ibra Sene, all current or former WARA/WARC board members. Professor Ismail Rashid was also scheduled to attend but last minute adverse developments obliged him to stay home.
This initiative has already been blessed with one highly positive result as Ismael Montana came with an MOU submitted for agreement by his institution Northern Illinois University to the Rector of University Cheikh Anta Diop.
